Head's up... similar project in Baltimore, but with a greater focus on supporting several local universities in their attempt to run planning/arch/art studios focused on the Baltimore. So far, they've set up a monthly series of Design Conversations (which are well attended and regarded).
Exciting!

The time is drawing near to start locking in locations for Design Museum Boston's first big show. With that in mind we are looking to you for exciting and different locale suggestions. Bus stops, unused retail space and corporate lobbies are just a couple of ideas being thrown around right now but there are more out there. Help us dig deeper into this iceberg and come up with some new and interesting places to show off designer's work. Post your…

Great post and video interview on
DesignBoston.org, a great site chronicling all things design in our great city. We ran into site author, Gradon Tripp, at the
SHIFTBoston forum and spoke about our vision for the museum:
"The approach Derek and Sam are taking for Design Museum Boston isn’t the…

In the forums,
Jared Downs suggested the museum have a display that informs visitors about human factors, but does that through the evolution of video game controllers. I think the museum should have displays that teach the more…

Last Thursday Design Museum Boston attended the SHIFTBoston forum. For those of you not familiar with SHIFTBoston it's an organization whose mission is to cultivate big ideas by asking the question, "what if this could happen in Boston?" To do this, SHIFTBoston launched a competition with Thursday night's event highlighting the 18 finalists from over 140 entries worldwide. It was a packed house and we had the pleasure of seeing some pretty wild and…

Today is the last day of the Damián Ortega show down at the
Boston ICA . If you haven't seen it, definitely worth a look.

"In Ortega’s work, objects are never allowed to rest—they are pulled apart, suspended, or rearranged, calling attention to the dynamism of the world around us and the hidden poetry in the everyday. A former political cartoonist, Ortega brings a subtle,… Continue

While populating our calendar I came across what looks like a great fashion exhibit at the
Peabody Essex Museum.
(functionality note: members can also post events, organizing a great event or going somewhere of interest, post it on the calendar!) I noticed they have a fun interactive component to the exhibit where you can create your own paper doll using Iris Apfel's couture.
Try it… Continue

Great meeting Friday night on web and community building strategy; they are linked tightly. Some of the first feedback we received on the site was that there should be a place where anyone interested in helping out (in ANY way, big or small) could go and learn about all the opportunities. As you can imagine, there are many. Tasks that take a few seconds and help spread the word to helping set up (and take down) exhibits, and more and more. We outlined…

Legendary designer Bill Moggridge will start as director of the Cooper-Hewitt in March. It looks like he'll shepherd the museum through their expansion and in doing so experiment with virtual and traveling design exhibits.
Via the Washington Post article: "Design has become much better recognized," Moggridge said. "We have simple design awareness but…

Just in case you aren't already in touch with them, you should reach out to the following folks:
Youth Design Boston - its an internship program for kids interested in design, probably a lot of folks associated with this program would be natural allies for your initiative.

A treasure trove of museum-future-thinking from Nina Simon over at Museum 2.0. I'm sure it will take days to digest it all but I'm looking forward to it. From the site:"I believe that museums have the potential to undergo a similar (r)evolution as that on the web, to transform from static content authorities to dynamic platforms for content generation and sharing. I believe that visitors can become users, and museums central to social interactions. Web…

Interesting talk by Nancy Proctor about the future of museums in the age of social media: Museum as Platform; Curator as Champion, via
museummobile.info. Very relevant to what we're trying to do as distributed online and offline spaces to exhibit design. What's out: stability/stodginess, curators as experts, monographs, and control. What's in: change, curators as collaborators, stories, and…
